Editorial Policy

How Daily Rank tests, scores, and ranks the products we recommend — and how we keep our coverage independent.

1. Our independence promise

Daily Rank is an independent review publication. We are paid in two ways: affiliate commissions when you buy a product through one of our links, and occasionally clearly labeled sponsored content. Neither affects what we recommend or where a product lands in our rankings.

No payment for placement. We have never accepted — and will never accept — payment to influence a ranking, boost a score, or remove a negative observation. If a brand ever offers this, we decline and disclose the attempt.

Affiliate commissions are a byproduct of good recommendations, not a goal in themselves. If a product scores poorly in our testing, it ranks poorly — full stop, regardless of commission rates.

2. Testing methodology

Every product we recommend has been used in a real home for at least two weeks before we publish. We don't run a lab; we run vacuums on floors where kids drop cereal and pets shed fur, because that's where the truth lives.

2.1 Test environments

  • Hardwood — sealed oak and laminate, both bare and with rugs in play.
  • Low-pile carpet — typical bedroom carpet, including edges where the wall meets the floor.
  • High-pile carpet — plush area rugs, where suction and brush design are tested hardest.
  • Tile — kitchen and entryway tile, including grout lines.

2.2 What we measure

  • Pet-hair pickup — we run a standardized shedding test with a Golden Retriever and a shedding brush.
  • Edge cleaning — we scatter rice along a baseboard and measure pickup within 5 mm of the wall.
  • Obstacle navigation — socks, charging cables, pet waste (simulated), and a child's Lego brick.
  • Battery life — continuous run time on the default cleaning mode in a 1,200 sq ft layout.
  • Noise — measured at ear height with the robot one meter away.

3. Scoring rubric

Each product is scored out of 100 using five weighted categories. The weights are fixed across a category page so products are compared on a level playing field.

  • Cleaning Performance — 35%. Pickup on hard floors and carpet, edge cleaning, pet-hair handling, stuck-on debris.
  • Navigation & Obstacle Avoidance — 20%. Mapping quality, obstacle recognition, getting stuck, coverage of complex layouts.
  • Smart Features & App — 15%. App reliability, mapping features, no-go zones, voice assistant integration, scheduling.
  • Maintenance — 15%. Dustbin size and emptying, brush tangling, filter replacement cost and ease, washability of parts.
  • Value — 15%. Performance per dollar at the manufacturer's MSRP, expected lifespan, warranty terms.
How ranks are derived: Each product's category score is the weighted average of its five sub-scores. The published rank is determined by that total — not by hand — so the methodology is reproducible.

4. Conflicts of interest

We are transparent about every relationship that could conceivably influence our coverage.

  • Sample and loaner products — if we receive a product for testing from a brand, we disclose this clearly in the review with a "Provided by manufacturer" note. We still buy a retail unit when feasible to confirm shipping-box contents and out-of-box experience.
  • Employee ownership — Daily Rank employees and contractors are prohibited from owning stock in any brand they cover. We disclose any pre-existing affiliate or consulting relationship before a review begins.
  • Reporting violations — if you spot something that looks like a conflict of interest we missed, please email editor@thedailyrank.com. We treat every tip seriously and follow up within five business days.

5. Updates & corrections

Robot vacuums move fast. A model that was best in class at launch can be eclipsed by a new release six months later, and firmware updates can fix (or occasionally break) navigation overnight.

  • We re-test any product still on our ranking at least once every 12 months, or sooner if a significant firmware update ships.
  • Every product card on our site displays a "Last updated" date so you can see how fresh the verdict is.
  • Material corrections — score changes, factual errors, or retest results — are logged at the bottom of the relevant review with the date and a one-sentence note.
  • If a product is discontinued, we pull it from active rankings and replace it with the next-best-tested option.

6. Sourcing

Our reviews are built on first-hand testing, but we cross-check against external sources to catch anything we might have missed.

  • Manufacturer specifications — we read every spec sheet, but we verify them with our own measurements (suction, noise, battery).
  • Independent reviews — we consult established publications and consumer testing bodies where relevant, both to triangulate our findings and to flag where our conclusions diverge.
  • Patents and academic research — when a product claims a novel technology (e.g., a new obstacle-recognition algorithm), we look for the underlying patent or research paper so we can describe it accurately.
  • User feedback — long-term reliability data comes from owners who have lived with the product for months. We aggregate owner reports from retailer reviews and our own survey work.
